You can see even more differences in our Sling Orange vs Blue guide.įrom sports to comedy to kids' programming to foreign language channels, Sling TV has a little something for everyone. That means Sling Orange & Blue will cost up to $60. Those in Fresno, Houston and Raleigh will get ABC on Sling TV for free, while those in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose region will be spending $5 more. Orange has ESPN (though it lost it once for two days) and Blue has local FOX, ABC and NBC affiliates (depending on your local market).A weird new twist, though, has been added for Sling Blue and Sling Orange & Blue. The service offers two basic packages of channels (Orange and Blue), then lets viewers pick and choose smaller extras, which usually cost $5 per month. This cable TV alternative also makes our best streaming services list, in part because it's by far the cheapest service ($40 per month) with either ESPN or local FOX, ABC and NBC affiliates - and it's often available at a promotional rate.

The dark side of Cl 2 production is that too much of it is released directly into the atmosphere. Of course, the by-product of magnesium production is elemental chlorine, which can be responsibly used for all of the above-mentioned health and manufacturing applications. The MgCl 2 is electrolyzed to produce Mg 0, a lightweight metal used in the auto industry. Some of this salt ends up on your french fries (NaCl), and some you throw on your sidewalk in the winter (CaCl 2). Through elaborate extraction procedures, the various chloride salts can be separated. The vast deposits of salt created during millions of years of continental upheaval and slow evaporation of the ancient Lake Bonneville are mined on the shores of the present-day Great Salt Lake. Elemental chlorine does not exist naturally on our planet but is manufactured by electrolysis of seawater. Where does all this chlorine come from? I can literally see tons of it out my window. All are synthesized by chlorination of hydrocarbon precursors. Chlorocarbon compounds range from the good (chloroquine, an antimalarial) to the bad (DDT and chlorofluorocarbons) to the downright ugly (polychlorinated biphenyls). Even less obvious to most is the role of chlorine in the wood and paper industry (as a bleach) and in the processing of metals and the production of other materials such as titanium dioxide. We tend to overlook the fact that the C in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes is chloride, and without chlorine we wouldn't have Saran wrap, nylon, microprocessors, soccer balls, or plastic toys. Only a fraction of that is in the form most consumers would easily recognize: household bleach and swimming pool chemicals. The Chlorine Chemistry Council argues that the element also has an enormous economic impact, contributing 2 million jobs and around $50 billion to the annual U.S. Chlorine continues to be the disinfectant of choice in the food industry, in swimming pools, and in the drinking water supply in most developed countries. The mid-19th century saw one of the most dramatic improvements in human health: Bleach began to be used as a disinfectant in hospitals, and chlorination of the water supply in London during a cholera outbreak in 1850 saved many lives. SHORE LEAVE Morton Salt maintains a plant near the south end of Utah's Great Salt Lake. It is an excellent disinfectant for swimming pools and water supplies, and its compounds are used in plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), stain removers, and bleach. Uses: Chlorine is essential to living systems and is also one of the top chemicals manufactured in the U.S. Breathing high concentration of the gas can be fatal chlorine was used as a poison gas during World War I. Today, most chlorine is produced through the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride.Īppearance: Yellowish-green, dense, sharp-smelling gas.īehavior: Liquid chlorine burns skin, and gaseous chlorine irritates mucous membranes. Occurrence: Found in nature dissolved in salts in seawater and in the deposits of salt mines. Identified as an element by Sir Humphry Davy in 1810. History: Discovered, yet misidentified as a compound, by Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1774. Name: From the Greek khloros, greenish yellow. In the small town of Javelle, France, chlorine added to alkaline water created l'eau Javelle ("bleach" in English, NaOCl in chemspeak) that was used in the fabric industry in the late-18th century. Sir Humphry Davy recognized the gas as an element in 1810 and named it based on the Greek word for its color, khloros.Ĭhlorine was by this time already in use. Carl Wilhem Scheele, a Swedish pharmacist, first described the greenish yellow gas in 1774 after dropping hydrochloric acid onto manganese dioxide. Sadly, the ≡ oxidation state of chlorine is often glossed over as the necessary counterion to an exotic metal ion or complex cation, the necessary yin to complement the yang.Ĭonversely, molecular chlorine, Cl 2, has held a starring role in history, both for its benefits to human health and for its detrimental effects on the environment. Arguably, chloride plays a more important role in the antitumor drug cisplatin, Pt(NH 3) 2Cl 2, although its function there is to get lost (that is, hydrolyze) so that platinum has room to bind to DNA. Sodium grabs all the press from NaCl as the dietary culprit in hypertension, while silver's the key to AgCl's action in photography. C&EN: IT'S ELEMENTAL: THE PERIODIC TABLE - CHLORINEĬHLORINE CYNTHIA BURROWS, UNIVERSITY OF UTAHĪ s an anion, chlorine is rather ordinary. It really depends on your wall, but the important thing is that the patch should be just a little shy of the thickness of the wall. In this case I got away with just one piece of 5/8″ plasterboard. Other times it’s a piece of 1/2″ and 1/4″ board. For thick plaster, I’ve used 2 pieces of 1/2″ plasterboard stacked on top of each other. You can always use multiple pieces if you need to.ĭepending on how thick your plaster is, you may need differing thicknesses of patching board. If you’ve got a complicated and large area to patch, you may have to be a bit of an art student to cut a patch to match, but just do your best. Screw the patch into the support pieces (or lath) every 6-12″ so that the patch is securely in place. Sink the heads of the screws into the plaster and don’t leave them proud of the surface, you’ll be covering them later.Ĭut a piece of drywall or plasterboard the same size and shape as your void and attach the piece using drywall screws. It may take a few times to get the screw to pull the piece tightly to the backside of the plaster, but it will work. Just back the screw out and try it again. Make sure to use screws long enough to make it all the way through the plaster and support pieces.Īs you screw in, the support piece may be pushed up by the screw. Once you have them in place, attach them with a couple screws into the existing plaster. These will be the supports for a piece of drywall or plasterboard we’ll install shortly. Next, slip them into the void and lay them across the opening as you see in the picture. In this case, I had a hole that was 4″ x 5″ so I cut 2 pieces of wood 7″ long. These supports are just small pieces of scrap wood (1/2″ to 3/4″ thick) that you can attach the patch to.Ĭut at least 2 pieces (cut more if there is a large area to patch) a few inches longer than the void you have to fill. If you have a hole (like in the picture) the first thing you need to do is attach support pieces. How to Patch Plaster Step 1 Install Supports If you do have lath behind the void, then skip to Step 2. If there is still lath in the damaged section, then the repair is even simpler, but that’s not always the case. Drywall or plasterboard (varying thicknesses). When you have an area (large or small) where you’re missing plaster, whether it’s thanks to the electrician/plumber/HVAC guy or the plaster was damaged some other way, you can patch the area rather simply with just a few items. This repair also works on drywall for all you new house folks too. I’ll show you how to easily fill in these missing sections. I’ve written about repairing plaster walls before, but sometimes there are sections of plaster that have been removed or are missing and you need to fill in the gaps. My 2 in 1 version like the one I’ve linked also has a rotating tray for things that could be broken up by a paddle, but the height clearance with the lid isn’t deep enough to use it to cook some items like sausage rolls. They do however make the best chips and roasted veg. Rotary types are not usually good for recipes where the food is breaded, glazed, likely to break up or in a tray/container. This is the type I used for years – the most common is a Tefal Actifry. Round air fryers with a paddle in the centre that rotates to move the food. I’ve since bought this version to use for some recipes where my smaller model was just too small. The unit is no larger than the 3.8 litre model on the outside but does have a larger internal basket capacity. This is the Cosori 4.7L (CAF-L501) with a 4.7 litre basket. I’ve also recommended to several friends and family the model with a slightly larger basket. The square(ish) shaped basket is 21cm x 21cm and 24cm on the diagonal. It isn’t an overly expensive or fancy model. I mostly use a Cosori Lite 3.8L (CAF-LI401S) with a 3.8 litre capacity. This is the type that you’ll see in the images in this recipe. Some larger models have two drawers so different items can be cooked at different temperatures or for different times. Food isn’t usually visible whilst cooking. A boxy type unit has a pull out drawer/basket. These are what I would consider to be the most common, especially in the UK. I consider there to be 4 main types: Basket Air Fryers Nope! The term air fryer is now used very broadly. If you’re new to my blog, welcome! But TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is devoid of all that. In a revenge saga, where the car does all the killing, you?d expect mutilated bodies, blood and gore. The romantic track has little novelty to offer.Īnother factor that stands out is the car, designed by famed automobile designer Dilip Chhabria, and the thrills that have been executed by action directors Kaushal-Moses. The only time the graph goes down is when the romantic portions take over. An overall stylishly-executed fare, the film entertains at most parts. A few dramatic scenes and the underwater sequence in the climax are simply superb. Of course, a Hindi film is incomplete without the mandatory song and dance routine and TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR has that as well, with the new pair handling those portions effortlessly.ĭirectors Abbas-Mustan have handled a few sequences with aplomb. Now this aspect may seem far-fetched to those who choose not to believe in such cinema. It repairs itself, it fights, it reacts, it survives calamities? exactly like a Bollywood hero. For, the car in TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR behaves like a super-hero. If the novel premise of the film is its USP, the very plot is also a downer. Hindi moviegoers have so far witnessed icchadhari snakes /animals or ghosts seeking revenge, but a car taking evil-doers to task is indeed a novel experience. How the wonder car takes the villains to task, eliminating them one by one, forms the crux of the film.Ī storyline like the one in TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR hasn?t been witnessed before. Raj finds a car in a junkyard and takes it upon himself to transform it into a macho machine. Kartar Singh owns a garage where Raj works. Devesh?s family thinks that he has died in an accident. When Devesh threatens to move court, the evil four, with the help of a corrupt police officer, kill him and along with his car, throw him in a lake. But without the knowledge of Devesh, they copy the design of the car and register it in their name. However, the four partners of the company disagree on certain terms and abort the deal. Devesh designs a swanky car, much ahead of its times, and goes to a company to fix a deal. Raj is the son of a car designer, Devesh. However, making the car behave like a human and adding the track of an aatma to the storyline may just look implausible to a section of hardcore Indian moviegoers. In that respect, TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is truly different. Yes, there has been a CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI and a SHATRANJ, but never has a car been projected as a hero. But, of course, a concept like TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is alien for Indian moviegoers. Omnibus Hearts incorporates the 10 of Diamonds. In Two Player Hearts, 3's, 5's, 7's, 9's, Jacks, and, Kings are removed from the deck, leaving 13 cards to be dealt to each player. Two people may play Hearts with an alteration to the deck. Typically, players want to get rid of high ranking Hearts and the Queen of Spades as those cards will most likely win the player a trick and gain them points. On the first turn, players will pass their three cards to the person to their left on the second turn, players will pass their three cards to the person to their right on the third turn, players will pass their three cards to the person in front of them and, on the fourth turn, no passing occurs. The direction of the pass changes in cycles of 4. If the game allows for passing, players will select 3 cards they would like to get rid of before each turn begins. Passing occurs before the lead card is placed at the beginning of the turn and creates an extra layer of complexity in the game and allows for more strategy for players to use. By the late 20 th century, Windows Operating System popularized the game even more by uploading a digital version of the game on their software.įor more information on the early history of Hearts, check out David Parlett's article here Variations Passing It then became very popular among grade school students. According to card games scholar David Parlett, Hearts first came to America around the 1880’s. By 1850, rules were added and modified Hearts became the penalty card the Queen of Spades became the specialty card etc. Reversis contained many elements now seen in modern day Hearts such as penalty points for tricks gained and additional points for certain cards like the Queen of Hearts. The history of Hearts begins with the 18 th century Spanish game of Reversis. If, however, a player wins all of the Hearts and the Queen of Spades in the game, the player “Shoots the Moon” and receives no points while all other players receive 26 points.įor more information on the rules of Hearts and its variations, check out pagat's article on the game hereĪ free online version of Hearts may be found here Players want to avoid wining tricks with Hearts and the Queen of Spades as much as possible. Hearts are worth 1 point each and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points. When all cards are played, players examine their tricks won and count the Hearts and the Queen of Spades. The winner of the trick goes first in the next round. If, on the first trick, a player does not have any Clubs to match the 2, they neither can play any Hearts nor the Queen of Spades. If they cannot follow suit, then any card may be played with the lead suit trumping others. Moving to the left of the 2 of Clubs, players must follow suit and try to out rank the cards in play. The player with the 2 of Clubs always makes the first lead starting with that card. The dealer shuffles the deck and passes out 13 cards clockwise to each player. The player with the lowest card becomes the dealer. Each player draws one card from a shuffled deck. If you are looking for cards to play Hearts with, check out a standard pack here or one of our more recent arrivals here.īefore game play can begin, a dealer must be selected. The objective of the game is to have the fewest points when someone reaches 100 points.įor other trick taking games, see our guides for Spades and Euchre. Hearts is a trick taking game that requires 4 players and a standard 52 playing card deck with Aces high and 2’s low. (All of the penalty cards in a game of Hearts) Card Game Rules In my humble opinion, they really needed something to freshen up what seemed to be a rinse-and-repeat model, and I think they’ve done an excellent job achieving that here. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the game has a level of depth that now places the Sakura series in the company of something greater than just VN eye candy. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much beyond the standard fare of what we’ve all come to know of the Sakura series: mammories. Kids can practice using the emotion wheel whenever they notice they are feeling something, whether it’s positive or negative. But when they label their feelings, kids can pull themselves out of that emotional circuit and into the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving. When kids feel their emotions, they are in the emotional part of the brain. This is because logic and emotional thoughts occur in two different parts of the brain. But rather than ignoring emotions and pushing them away, labeling can help make sense of them. Labeling emotions is an effective way to stop emotional spirals before they get worse. Here are different ways they can do just that: Labeling your emotions One of the best ways kids can use the emotion wheel is to get to know themselves better. How to Use the Emotion Wheel to Know Yourself By understanding what is causing or triggering their emotions, kids can be more in control of what they feel, especially when their emotions seem more difficult to handle. Many children might struggle to express their feelings when they don’t know the root cause of their emotions. It helps them identify the root causes of their emotions. The emotion wheel can also teach kids how to cope with their emotions. The emotion wheel can show where different emotions intersect. Each emotion is distinct, but they are also connected and can influence each other. This might not be necessary for more straightforward emotions (such as happiness or gratitude), but the wheel comes in handy for more complex emotions like apprehension or pensiveness.Īnother benefit of using the emotion wheel is the ability of kids to see how different emotions connect. This tool makes it easier to understand and express how we are feeling. Kids can experience several benefits from using the emotion wheel. These are found between the pairs of emotions in the flower shape. The emotion wheel also works by combining behaviors associated with emotions, such as aggressiveness (anger and anticipation) or awe (fear and surprise). In the case of anger, for example, it is a shade of red while annoyance is more pink and rage is a darker red. Plutchik’s wheel arranges each section in a flower shape, with each petal representing one emotion.Įvery emotion on the wheel is color-coded, and the different degrees of these emotions are represented by lighter and darker colors. Anger to a lesser degree might be “annoyance,” which can be found on the outer edge of the wheel, while the greater degree is rage, found in the very center of the emotion wheel. Most modern versions of the emotion wheel will put these emotions at the center, then they branch out to more complex emotions as the wheel grows larger.įor instance, kids will find the primary emotion “anger” as one of the emotions in the middle of the wheel. How Does an Emotion Wheel Work?Īn emotion wheel works by showing children the eight basic emotions: joy, fear, surprise, anger, trust, sadness, disgust, and anticipation. The first emotion wheel was created by psychologist Robert Plutchik, which is why it is commonly referred to as Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions. What is an Emotion Wheel for Kids?Īn emotion wheel is a diagram or illustration that shows levels of emotions to help kids identify and understand their own or other people’s emotions. One such method is by using what is called an emotion wheel, which we’ll go into detail here. Fortunately, there are some ways for us to organize these emotions to better understand them. With our capacity to feel so much, it can be challenging not to get lost or feel overwhelmed. There are even instances wherein we feel several emotions all at once, making it even more complicated to clearly identify each one. Sometimes the things we feel are so complex and overwhelming that it is almost impossible to describe them. Putting a name to our emotions can be difficult. There are several models that are useful in identifying emotions. An emotion wheel is a model that allows individuals to identify primary emotions with varying intensities and combinations.Identifying emotions can be difficult for kids, especially if they are made up of several complex feelings. |
